What exactly is a Constitutional Republic?

Our Founders were well aware of the messy nature of politics. They knew better than most the fallen nature of man and did their best to put up safeguards to prevent the mob rule of a pure democracy. That is why our government was set up as a constitutional republic. Constitutional so that we are governed by the rule of law as set out in this amazing document and not by the fleeting whims of 51% of our citizens. Republic so that supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to elect representatives responsible to them and governing according to that rule of law. Problem: we are an ill-informed electorate, uneducated about our Constitution without a biblically-based worldview and clueless where candidates stand on that rule of law so that voters are unable cast informed votes. Voters make decisions as if they are electing an American Idol--basing their votes on perceived personality and charisma, not on candidates' character and core values. After elections, we do not hold those leaders accountable for how they vote, for the laws they pass, or for other decisions they make that impact our families, our faith, and our freedom, not to mention our finances. Thus, we are losing significant ground in all arenas. The safeguards put in place by our Founders to protect this unique form of government have been slowly eroded over time and we have now seen many of their fears come to pass. We are quickly becoming the United Socialist States of America. Unless we wake up, get up, get educated, and get involved NOW.
